If you're looking for a delicious, authentic meal and a warm welcome in Sumida, I really recommend swinging by Donguri. My family and I came in June 2026 to try the Okonomiyaki but we're glad that we ended up eating all the four meals that the owner/chef recommended: fried octopus, monjayaki, Okonomiyaki and yakisoba. The monjyaki, a local down-town Tokyo dish, was delicious! The owner/chef's explained the history of each dish. He somehow made it feel like all the guests were eating together in a large dinner party rather than as separate groups. Reserving in advance is a good idea. The menu is in Japanese but the staff speak English. Thanks for the highlight of our trip! /Nemo from Sweden Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Dear Nemo, Thank you so much for this beautiful and thoughtful review! It makes me truly happy to hear that your family enjoyed all four recommended dishes — fried octopus, monjayaki, okonomiyaki, and yakisoba. I’m especially glad that monjayaki, Tokyo’s local downtown dish, became a memorable part of your trip. What you wrote about the restaurant feeling like one big dinner party really means a lot to me. That is exactly the kind of atmosphere I hope to create at Donguri — not just separate tables, but people sharing food, stories, smiles, and the warm spirit of Tokyo’s Shitamachi. I believe your experience became special because you and your family came with a genuine desire to enjoy local food and culture. Thank you for bringing that wonderful energy with you. If you ever return to Japan, I would love to welcome you to our Shitamachi Experience. It is a deeper cultural experience where you can enjoy monjayaki, learn about Tokyo’s downtown food history, discover local festival and mikoshi culture, and feel the everyday warmth of our neighborhood. Thank you again for making Donguri a highlight of your trip. I hope to see you and your family again someday in Sumida!

We visited Donguri, and even though we don’t speak Japanese, the owner welcomed us with such warmth and kindness. He took the time to share the story behind monjayaki and prepared delicious yakisoba on the grill for us. The food was fantastic, and the owner’s friendliness made the experience truly special. Highly recommended for anyone looking for authentic food and genuine hospitality! ありがとうございます! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000

Thank you so much for your kind words! I truly believe that because you came with a willing heart to enjoy, you were able to fully feel the Monjayaki experience from Tokyo’s Shitamachi (downtown). If you ever come back to Japan, I’d love to invite you to join our Shitamachi Experience—a deeper journey into local life, including Monjayaki and traditional mikoshi (portable shrine) culture.Looking forward to welcoming you again someday!
