Downriggers on the Water is a refreshing restaurant, featuring excellent service and quality food. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Downriggers. My wife and I had been in a busy schedule of social events. When we arrived at Downriggers we were not impressed at first: you head up a kind of commercial parking deck and into a lobby reminiscent of a dentist's office. Don't be discouraged: once inside the maitre d' seated us promptly at a wonderful window overlooking the harbor. We began our meal by clearing the dust from our throats: my wife her Cosmo, which she quite enjoyed. I had a pleasant hard cider. We proceeded to order clam chowder: my wife a cup, I a bowl. The bowl of clam chowder was a meal in itself. The chowder was thick and loaded with clams, very flavorful. Those who follow me know that Clam Chowder is a benchmark for me: good places do it well. This Clam Chowder is thicker than I prefer, but certainly not a reason to complain. De Gustibus! We continued on to have steamed clams and the crab dip. Both were wonderful. The clams were delicious in their wine and butter sauce, accompanied by perfect bread for dipping. My wife had expected Steamed Clams to be like New England Soft Shells: not so. This isn't New England. Vive le difference! Likewise, the crab dip, also accompanied by toasted bread was excellent. It is not an exaggeration to say we were well sated, and probably more accurate to say we were stuffed little piggies! Service is excellent. Downriggers is clean, nicely laid out and appointed, with a beautiful view. Parking is a bit of a challenge, but not impossible. Downriggers is spacious and well designed for casual conversation. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Downriggers. Try it: we don't think you'll be disappointed.
