Visited the newly renovated Durant’s for Sunday dinner to celebrate two birthdays. Walking through the kitchen like a scene of Goodfellas is always a neat experience. When it comes to the indoor design you can tell everything is new but they kept the old school classic steakhouse vibes with the red and black color scheme. Service was top notch, super attentive and they definitely made you feel welcomed. Shout outs to our waiter Justin, he was super professional and informative. I think one thing that stood out for me was their uniforms. It was a nice change compared to the all black or white attire personnel at other steakhouses/high end restaurants typically wear. Now let’s get to the food. The cocktails were tasty, I recently have been in a mocktail phase and I truly enjoyed their zero proof lychee and tonic as well as their watermelon margarita. I know typically there’s bread service at the beginning however our servers forgot to bring it, so unfortunately we weren’t able to try it. For appetizers, we ordered the calamari and the crispy flamingo shrimp . Both apps were yummy, the crispy flamingo shrimp tastes similar to the bang bang shrimp they offer at Bonefish Grill in the east coast. For our entrees we tried their lamb shops, pork chops, NY strip, and petit filet. All proteins were very delicious and cooked to perfection. The pork chops had a little crisp to them that I really enjoyed. For the sides we ordered the Mac and cheese, the sautéed asparagus, and the scalloped potatoes. My favorite was definitely the asparagus, second fav was the scalloped potatoes which needed just a tad more salt, and lastly the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was made out of shells and the cheese was just too runny for my liking. For desert we picked something simple and small since we were stuffed so we tried various flavors of their gelato including the mango and it was pretty delectable. I highly recommend Durant’s for great food & a classic feel! Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5

I have been going to Durant’s for 50 years, and what is there today simply isn’t the Durant’s I knew. It now feels like just another Prime Steak Concepts restaurant operating under the Durant’s name. It would almost be more honest to change the name and let the restaurant’s food and service stand on their own rather than trade on the history and reputation of the original Durant’s. The filet was nowhere near as tender or flavorful as the steaks I remember from the real Durant’s. The baked potato was badly overcooked, and the bread was so overcooked it was inedible. But the greatest disappointment was what has been done to the restaurant itself. The male waiters in black tuxedos are gone. The servers no longer really serve in the traditional Durant’s sense; they take your order and present the bill, and food delivery people bring the food. The red flocked wallpaper that gave the side dining room so much of its character is gone. The photographs that once covered the walls and told the story of the place are gone. Durant’s was never just a steakhouse. It was a Phoenix institution with a personality, history, atmosphere, and style unlike anywhere else. Those things were as much a part of Durant’s as the steaks. That soul and spirit of Durant's have been stripped away. What remains feels like a counterfeit Durant’s—keeping the famous name while removing much of what made that name famous in the first place. What makes that particularly disappointing is no one there knows much about the history of Durant's, but talk about “preserving” it while making so much of that history disappear. I didn’t expect Durant’s never to change. But I did expect it to still feel like and maintain the quality of Durant’s. It doesn’t on either count.
