Due to a LONG wait line at Chili's on Sunday, we trooped next door and ate lunch at the family-owned El Potrillo Mexican restaurant. We had a pleasant and tasty dining experience, eating lunch with the family, after Sunday morning worship. No waiting to be seated ; we immediately received chips, salsa and water. Have to tell you that the salsa was too for the grandkids, my hubby and one daughter, so we ordered a large sized bowl of their REAL, white cheese queso, to provide a 'chip dip', for those who cant take the heat. This queso is YUMMY & fabulous... imo, ($9 for a large bowl), BUT it contains VERY finely chopped jalapeños, so the children & hubby could not enjoy it, due to the peppers. They offer INEXPENSIVE lunch specials 7days a week!! Man, that's a blessing. SO many restaurants take advantage of church attenders, by NOT offering the affordable lunch meals they sell M-F. Our food delivery was not too fast, or too slow. All the orders were correct. The food was hot, fresh and attractive. There was no waiting for refills, napkins, chips, et al, during this leisurely, enjoyable meal. We love frequent service checkins, therefore I'm rating their service !When we were ready for some togo boxes & our check, we didn't see our waiter. It was about 10 minutes, before he turned up. I eat very, very slowly , so it did not bother me, personally, I just kept eating, while the family talked. It would have truly been a perfect lunch, if the waiter had warned us, (since we had 2 little kids at the table), that the queso was spicy, so the grandchildren weren't disappointed. If they had a mild salsa option and a mild white queso option, PLUS they asked if you had a preference... I believe I could get my family to eat here very OFTEN. We eat Mexican for lunch, a couple Sundays a month and the location is convenient to church. When I consider all the positives, (the TVs have football games playing, without the audio, there's no waiting to be seated, affordable prices for lunch EVERY day, a fun, themed atmosphere in a restaurant that smells good, is clean, serves tasty, hot & attractive food and has attentive, friendly dining room staff), it is obvious to why El Potrillo has endured the test of time. Full service restauranteering is a challenging business. The margins are low, costs can be unpredictable and competition is HUGE. Their location is oversaturated, which is why all our favorite restaurants have closed, even the national chains come and go, in the 1 mile radius surrounding the corner of Youree Dr. & East 70th St. It's sad and frustrating, over 20+ years, to continually lose the restaurants our whole family can agree on. I think I'll bring an unopened, small sized, container of Albert's mild salsa, so we can all enjoy lunches at El Potrillo, to solve the spicy salsa issue. We won't buy a $9 large bowl of white queso again, which will save money and give the four lightweights a salsa dip they can enjoy. Grandmasneed big purses for a reason!!
