Sadly, El Rey burned down late last year and it doesn't appear that they'll be able to rebuild--possibly an insurance issue. It will be missed as there aren't many dining options like this in the area. There are two Jilberto's within a few miles, but those are more take-out-focused while you went to El Rey to sit down with friends to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. ETA: According to the owner's reply (below) shortly after I posted, Jilberto's WILL be rebuilt! Many people will be happy to hear this. Response from the owner a day ago. We are in the rebuilding process it just takes time. You should start seeing a new building go up in about 6 months. El Rey Restaurant is the perfect oasis in Pauma Valley, to escape the heat, & relax in their A/C cooled, homey-feeling dining room, while enjoying some ultra flavorful Mexican Food. On our way back from Palomar Mountain State Park, we parked right in front of the El Rey sign, & hurried inside. Temperature was a searing 94 degrees outside, at 1pm, when we arrived. There were several tables filled with large parties of guests, & with their small, but friendly staff, it took awhile to place our order, & also get our food, but it was totally worth it, when the plates arrived. My wife & I put in the exact same orders, 1 Chile Relleno- a soft fluffy egg coating, envelopes a tender Poblano Pepper, oozing with abundant cheese inside. The Spanish Rice which comes with it, had a deep tomato-infused flavor, & was really tasty. The standard cheese-covered refried beans were on the plate, as well. We each added a Carnitas Soft Taco, which came on a separate plate. The soft corn tortilla is loaded with tender pork, & topped with Pico De Gallo, & a nice dollop of guacamole. Yum!
