El Riojano was on my must-visit list before we even landed in Madrid, and it delivered completely. Found it through TikTok and Google reviews, and I am so glad it made the itinerary. Located in the Sol neighborhood, this bakery was founded in 1855 by royal baker Damaso de la Maza, which alone makes it worth seeking out. We visited on a Thursday morning around 10:30am, and it was blissfully quiet, just two or three other tables in the back when we arrived. Hours are 9am to 12pm, so timing matters, and we felt like we hit it perfectly. The layout is charming: a bakery storefront up front, and then you walk through a doorway into a full tea room in the back. The interior is ornate and worth slowing down for. The counter back there is adorned with gold bearsclaw finishes reminiscent of a clawfoot bathtub, gold figures along the panels, and marble slabs throughout. Really unique and easy to appreciate when it's not crowded. The bathroom is located downstairs for patrons, so something to make note of if ADA. We ordered a cappuccino, a mocha, a bayonesa, a bartolillo, a hojaldre, and a small assortment of savory pastries. Everything was around 3 euros, which felt like a steal for the setting and quality. Service was warm and unhurried. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Order type: Dine in Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: €1–10
