I was meeting a friend last night for dinner, in Harrisburg, at El Sol Mexican Restaurant, located at 18 S. 3rd Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101. The friend I was meeting said it was one of their favorite authentic Mexican restaurants. I haven't had good, authentic Mexican food in approximately 25-years and I am a big fan of Mexican food, so I was delighted to learn of this restaurant. The dinner reservations were for 5:30 PM, on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. Since I was driving from the Shrewsbury area, I didn't know what to expect of the rush-hour traffic, so I left at 4:00 PM. I am a fast driver. I am not going to reveal what year and type of vehicle I drive just in case the police are reading my posts. LOL. The traffic on I-83 was not too bad and I fortunately I did not see any hidden state or local authorities to slow me down. The only traffic and congestion I experience was when I exited I-83 at 2nd Street, in Harrisburg. I was only on 2nd Street for less than 2-miles before I was guided to 3rd Street by my GPS where the restaurant was located. My 47-minute drive took me approximately 30-minutes. Upon my arrival, there were a few people at the tables outside and a handful of people inside, but it was basically sparse. I had an hour to kill, so I went to the full-bar to have a drink while I waited. I ordered a Margarita; Top-Shelf - $9 - El Jimador Anejo Tequila, Grand Manier, lime juice, and sour mix, which must have been on Special because it cost me $7. It arrived in a large, heavy glass, on the rocks, rimmed with salt. It was wonderful, of course. I only had one because it was so big and I was driving. My dinner guest arrived on time and we were seated at our reserved table. My dinner guest asked for a House Margarita and I ordered water with lime and a basket of chips and salsa while we perused the menu and talked a bit. The chips and salsa were homemade. The chips were light, not greasy, and the salsa was a pleasant mix of tomatoes, cilantro, onions, and peppers. After chatting a while, we ordered our dinner entrees. My dinner guest recommended something I've never heard of before and I gladly took the recommendation based on its description. I am a Pescatarian, but I've been known to wander off the reservation more than once. When it comes to Mexican food, I throw the rules out of the window. Albeit, they had a fish and seafood version of this entrée, I wanted the true Mexican version with meat. We both ordered the Molcajetes Mixto. The word "molcajete" is Spanish for "mortar and pestle." These volcanic rock bowls, originally used by the ancient Aztecs are still used in Mexican cooking to grind spices and make sauces. We use them as a serving bowl for our house specialties: the molcajete mixto is served with rice, beans, and warm corn tortillas. The Molcajetes Mixto was described as a delicious combination of steak, chicken, shrimp, mushrooms and cheese drizzled with our homemade red sauce and served in a flame-kissed molcajete, which melts the cheese and retains heat. Garnished with cilantro, spring onions and cactus for $20.99. The volcanic rock bowls arrived at the table piping hot, with aromatic cheese and red sauce bubbling within, with jumbo detailed shrimp and orange slices, clinging to the sides, filled with strips of steak, chicken, mushrooms, jalapeno peppers, and the red sauce. I ordered the spicy. My dinner guest ordered the mild. Fresh corn tortillas, a small portion of rice and refried beans were served on the side. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of this meal like I normally do. You cannot imagine the size of this volcanic rock bowl. It was huge. Even though I am giving this review a 5-star rating, there is one issue that I want to surface. I had to ask to have my water glass refilled when it was obviously low when the server came to our table and asked if everything was okay. When the server returned to fill my water glass with a pitcher of water, he did not fill my dinner guest's water glass at the same time. He had to be reminded that we wanted our water glasses refilled on more than one occasion. Overall, I would highly recommend coming to El Sol Mexican Restaurant for dinner.
