# Racism, Served Chilled, With Drinks — Engel Bar I visited Engel Bar with a group of people I'd met at a leadership development programme, to spend some time together after the course, on 16th July'26 at around 6:30 pm. I'm writing this as a full account because I want to include all the details. It was a beautiful summer's day — the sun was shining, and the Royal Exchange terrace was full of happy people dressed in summer staples: hats, sunglasses, linen and cotton, sipping cold beer, Aperol spritz, and chilled glasses of bubbly. The terrace was thriving with laughter, giggles, and happy chatter. We were a group of five and were lucky to find a table on a day that was visibly busy. We settled in and waited for someone to come and take our order. But there were no servers in sight, so I decided to walk up the flight of steps to where the bar was set up and place the order myself. There were two people working the bar in that area: a brown gentleman dealing with a stack of dirty glasses, and a white gentleman taking an order from another woman. I waited my turn. Once he'd served the woman ahead of me, he made eye contact with me. I pointed to our table and said that's where we were seated, and that we'd like to order. He cut me off and said, "We are very busy today, we'll come to the table for the order." He was curt, rude, and dismissive. I also felt he might have been inebriated, though that's a conjecture I can't confirm. I said okay and walked back to the table. He came over to our area a few minutes later — and ignored our table entirely. I want to point out that our table had five people: four brown people (three women and one man) and one white gentleman, whose presence was visually outnumbered by the rest of us. When the person next to me and I pointed out that he hadn't attended to our table, the white gentleman in our group called out to get his attention, which finally prompted him to engage with us. He gave us a look of disdain. I looked at him again and said, "Yes, you said you'd come to our table," to which he responded with exasperation, "I said we are very busy today." We were all taken aback. He then made eye contact with Matt (the only white person) flashed him the widest, most obviously fake smile, and said, "I can take your order." Matt looked visibly surprised, and it showed on his face. The server then pulled back and said, "I'm sorry, sir, please tell me what you'll have." We stayed quiet. Matt placed the order for all of us. Our drinks arrived, we chatted for a while, and finished our round. About 40 minutes later, the same gentleman came back to our table — again addressing only Matt. This time, he seemed to have sobered up. He apologised for his earlier behaviour; it was clear that the fake, pretentious smile he'd flashed earlier — a gesture meant to mask his obvious annoyance with me — had started to weigh on him. He said sorry a few times and tried to bring some humour into it, joking that we were probably wondering why he was making conversation instead of just settling the bill. In the process, he mentioned that he was Lithuanian. Since he was only speaking to Matt, none of the rest of us engaged with him. His curt, rude behaviour throughout the evening had been directed at me. Matt ended up caught in the middle of it — and the apology, when it finally came, was addressed to him, not to any of the rest of us. Setting aside interpretation, here is what happened, in sequence: the server's curtness and dismissiveness were directed at a brown woman — one of the four brown members of the group. His later attention, his attempt at charm, and his eventual apology were all directed exclusively at the one white member of the group, who had said nothing to him until that point. This incident remains unresolved for me. I walk past the Engel Bar terrace every day on my way to work and back and I've seen this gentleman waiting tables many times since — each time wondering whether he's just serving drinks with a dash of racism? This review is my way of getting closure. Food: 1 Service: 1

Dear Sugandh,My name is Kim, and I am the Operations Director at D3 Collective. Engel Bar, which you visited on 16 July, is one of our venues.I have read your review carefully several times. It is clear that you have taken considerable time to reflect on your experience before deciding to share it publicly, even though the visit took place in July. Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed account. While I am saddened to read it, I appreciate you sharing your perspective.First and foremost, I sincerely apologise for the standard of service you experienced. Although it was one of the busiest summer evenings of the year, that should never prevent us from delivering attentive, courteous, and respectful service to every guest. From your review, I understand that what has stayed with you is not simply the delay in service, but the way you felt you were treated throughout the interaction. You described feeling dismissed when you approached the bar, overlooked after being told someone would come to your table, and later feeling that the waiter directed his attention, conversation, and eventual apology only to the white member of your group. I am genuinely sorry that this was your experience and that it has continued to affect you months later. You mentioned that our waiter apologised later in the evening but that you felt the apology was not genuine. Regardless of his intention, I accept that it did not leave you feeling heard or respected, and for that I sincerely apologise.I would also like to address your concern regarding discrimination. While I cannot speak to the personal perception you formed from those interactions, I can assure you that discrimination has no place whatsoever within our company. D3 Collective operates with a strict zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination in any form. Our CEO and Founder was born in Sri Lanka, and I was born in Korea. Across D3 Collective, we employ more than 100 people from a wide range of nationalities, ethnicities, religions, cultures, genders, and backgrounds. Diversity is one of our strengths, and we work hard to create an environment where both our guests and our employees feel respected, welcomed, and valued. For that reason, I do not believe that any member of our team would intentionally treat a guest differently because of their race or background. However, I also recognise that your experience led you to feel exactly that, and I do not wish to dismiss those feelings. Your perception of what happened matters, and it is important to us that guests leave our venues feeling respected.Having reviewed the circumstances, it is evident that the waiter recognised his earlier manner had fallen below the standard we expect and returned to apologise. While that demonstrates some awareness on his part, it clearly did not address the impact the interaction had on you or the rest of your group. We expect our team to communicate professionally and respectfully at all times, especially during busy service, and we will continue reinforcing those expectations through training and management.I am truly sorry that this experience has remained unresolved for you and that it has stayed with you each time you have walked past Engel Bar since your visit. That is certainly not the lasting impression we ever want a guest to have of our venue. If you would be willing to discuss your experience further, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly. Please feel free to contact me at kims@d3collective.co.uk or on 07720 740294. I would be happy to listen to your concerns personally and discuss them in more detail.Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. Your feedback has been discussed with the venue management team and forms part of our ongoing commitment to improving both our service standards and our guests' experience.Kind regards,KimOperations DirectorD3 Collective
