Let me preface this by saying that I have dined at a number of college culinary school on-campus restaurants. At a previous school, I used to refer to it as the faculty dining room, even though it was open to everyone. It was mostly us who ate there. This one seemed to have more grad students and secretaries than faculty today. For a while I was the only one, although a few more came in as I left. So, I was finally on campus with nowhere I had to be, at a convenient time to try the place out, during their very limited lunch hours of operation. The food was mostly pretty good. I loved the broth in the turkey noodle soup, and the fries that came with my burger. Next time, I will probably just get that. My burger was cooked perfectly to my order, which seems to rarely happen (pun intended) at "real" restaurants. And the bun was lovely. However the beef did not have a good flavor to it. I can't really blame Epicure for this, since it has been a couple of decades since most of the really good, flavorful beef disappeared (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) from the market. Still, it is disappointing. The service was really fairly poor, which is pretty much always the case in these places. It is not my discipline, but I am always kind of amazed that a school having students wait tables would not think to train them. It seems like the very best waiters anywhere this side of a Michelin star restaurant ought to come from culinary school restaurants. Frankly, I would be happy to moonlight away from my own department for a few hours a term to teach these kids how to be great servers. It is not rocket science (which I also teach). And yet, I rarely encounter it. My wife waited tables through both undergrad and grad school, and paid her way through nicely, with excellent tips... because she was an excellent waitress, and a rarity even then. Why is good table service so hard? Today my waitress actually stood next to my shoulder and waited for me to fill out the receipt and sign it while she watched. Really? But enough of my complaining. It was decent, if a bit expensive for a culinary school restaurant on campus. Usually they are subsidized so that they are kind of cheap, and a bit better than this one. But it was not bad, if a bit limited on the menu. If the timing is right, I will go there again. I can recommend it, especially if you are tired of the noise and fast food down the hall, in the student union food court. So there you have it. See you in class. Bon apetit!  ;-)
