Eva has one of the best outdoor patios on Newbury Street. If people watching is your thing, this is hard to beat. The patio is spacious, the views are unobstructed, and it's a great place to spend an afternoon. That said, I left a little confused by the restaurant's Mediterranean branding. I've eaten at Mediterranean restaurants all over the world, and their identity is usually obvious. Here, the menu felt more contemporary American with Mediterranean influences than distinctly Mediterranean. That's not necessarily a criticism, just different from what I expected. The service was warm and welcoming. One piece of feedback: when guests ask for recommendations, it's much more helpful to explain why a dish stands out rather than simply saying it's "good" or a favorite. Tell me what makes the calamari different, how the tuna is prepared, or what flavors to expect. I started with the tuna tartare and calamari. The tartare was fresh but fairly straightforward, lacking the signature twist that many restaurants bring to the dish. The calamari, however, was excellent. Boston has always been one of my benchmark cities for calamari, and Eva delivered exactly what I was hoping for. The biggest disappointment was the seared tuna sandwich. I love a good rare tuna sandwich, especially after eating so many excellent versions on the West Coast. Here, the bread completely overwhelmed the tuna. I honestly struggled to taste the fish at all. I'd gladly pay a few dollars more for a much thicker cut of tuna because I think the sandwich has the potential to be something special. Overall, I came away with mixed feelings. The patio is outstanding, the service is genuinely friendly, and there are enough positives that I'd be willing to return and explore more of the menu. I just wouldn't order the tuna sandwich again.
