This restaurant was strongly recommended to me by ChatGPT after it analyzed many reviews, so I came here specifically to try the Uzbek plov. The restaurant has very elaborate, upscale décor and a strong Uzbek atmosphere. However, when I arrived at around 12:30 p.m., the large dining room was almost completely empty. Based on the food alone, I would give it three stars. The plov was not bad, but it was very ordinary and far below what I expected from a restaurant with such a high rating. The meat tasted average, and the portion of meat was smaller than what I usually find in an ordinary serving of plov. The rice was somewhat firm, although it was fully cooked and not underdone. There was also very little carrot. Overall, there was nothing seriously wrong with the dish, but it was not worth making a special trip for and did not live up to either the restaurant’s rating or its luxurious presentation. The service brought my rating down from three stars to two. When ordering, I clearly asked for double meat. Although the server’s English was limited, he repeated “double meat” to confirm the order. When the dish arrived, I asked again whether it had double meat, and he nodded and confirmed that it did. In reality, it did not appear to contain double meat. To be fair, I was not charged extra for it, so this seems more like a communication failure: the server did not fully understand my request but confirmed it twice anyway. At the end of the meal, my bill was a little over 3,700 tenge, and I paid 5,000 tenge in cash. The staff member took the cash, went behind the counter, and then walked away without returning my change. I eventually had to use Google Live Translate to ask for it. Only after I asked was the full change returned. When I left, I saw the same staff member sitting near the entrance, so it did not appear that he had been continuously occupied with another urgent task. Regardless of intent, this made the payment experience uncomfortable and unprofessional. The serious safety hazards are what ultimately brought my rating down from two stars to one. When I entered, the main door was closed, so guests had to move toward a side entrance. The entrance area is finished in nearly identical gray stone, and the step has almost no visual contrast, edge marking, or warning sign. An elderly local woman who entered at the same time first tried the closed main door, then moved toward the side entrance and failed to see the step. She fell, and I helped her up. The same problem exists inside the restaurant. The dining tables are placed on raised platforms separated from the central aisle by a step. Under the dim lighting, the platform, step edge, and aisle all have essentially the same flooring color, with no contrasting strip or visible warning. When leaving, I nearly stepped off the platform and fell as well. This is not merely an aesthetic issue. It is a real and predictable safety hazard that has already caused a guest to fall. The food itself was about a three-star experience, the service brought it down to two stars, and the serious safety problems ultimately made this a one-star experience. Fahar is a local Uzbek/Central Asian restaurant that is full of atmosphere and serves great food. Almaty has a lot of western style restaurants which tourists seem to flock to but you would be missing out on an authentic experience of a place where locals go to eat. Our small group of Australians ate here on both nights of our stay in Almaty. We ordered a variety of dishes including manti dumplings on the first night and then a few chicken and beef casseroles and a pizza on the second night. Food was tasty, portions large and service efficient and friendly. The interior decor is stunning and there are indoor water features, booths and floor eating nooks with lots of scatter pillows. There are quite a few vegetarian options on the menu with soups, salad, pizzas and samosas. Along with all the plov favourites and horse meat features heavily as its a Kazakh speciality. I have translated their menus from Russian to English (see photos) to help you decide what to eat before you go and take away any confusion with the language barrier. On our second night we were treated to two function parties in the dining space including a celebration for a little 1 year old girl. Thanks so much to the family of whom a member who spoke amazing English came over and invited us to dance with them and explained their traditions. They then sent over the musician to play and sing us a traditional Kazakh welcome song on his dombra. A true highlight of our trip and on our final night of our holiday it was so special. Eat and live like a local, come give Fahar some love if you are a tourist in town. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
