A colleague and I had walked out for about an hour towards and then through the Al Murabba neighbourhood, with no particular destination in mind. And so it was chance and instinct that guided us to Falafel Abu Bashar - and what good fortune that was. Abu Bashar, the eponymous proprietor and cook, was behind the counter, hard at work at many of the wonders of his kitchen. The two other customers dining at the time (there are only a couple of tables) were two young gentlemen, who luckily spoke excellent English and whom we entrusted to order for us, for the menu was only in Arabic. And they ordered terrifically: gorgeous fresh hummus, well seasoned and dressed with glorious olive oil; a delicious dish of beans and chickpeas, coated in a yogurt dressing, enriched with this sensational oil; a plate of grilled aubergine, with mountains of chilli and parsley. There were then sides of home-made fresh pickles and chilli sauce, boiled egg, flatbread, and chips. And how could one forget the falafel themselves, light and herby, a little crispy on the outside and fluffy within: divine! It was a magical experience: charming, genuine, generous, and absolutely delicious. Our fellow diners astounded us by very kindly getting our meal, invoking the Saudi tradition of hospitality, and insisting that it was how guests to the country are treated. And so to them - and of course to Abu Bashar - we are extremely grateful. Heartily recommended. Meal type: Dinner Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
