Great flavorful tacos and sandwiches. Even though the soft tortillas in the tacos are the typical small sized ones, they stack 2 white corn tortillas and plenty of filling. I had the Esta Camarón, chicken tinga and another one with steak. They all had this great korean bbq flavor, spices and just the right spiciness. A friend had the cochinita pibil sandwich, it was big, fully stuffed and super flavorful. The place does not sell alcohol but does allow bringing your own bottle. It has room for around 30 people (maybe even less), it's very informal ambiance, just the clerk taking the order and he will reach you the food as it comes out, relatively fast service too. Great and inexpensive place to grab good food anytime.
I happened to stumble upon this place while looking through Yelp in search of a place to grab a quick bite after drinking with a coworker and I'm glad I did! Not only was the food affordable, it tasted so good! The interior of the restaurant isn't the most aesthetically pleasing, but don't let that diminish the quality of the food. My coworker and I both got 2 orders of tacos and we left feeling very full and satisfied. Order: - Sesame Kalbi (5/5) - Korean BBQ Pork (5/5) - Vegan Al Pastor (4/5) ~ tofu taco - Vegan Forastero Taco (5/5) ~ tempeh taco Pros: - A lot of great meat and veggie/vegan options to choose from ~ they have tacos, sandwiches, bowls, and even fries - Tasty food ~ I really enjoyed my meat tacos (my favorite was the pork) and my coworker enjoyed her vegan tacos (she thought the tempeh tasted better than the tofo - Convenient location ~ located near all the bars in Old Town and the L station - Affordable ~ I got two tacos for about $8 - Relatively large portions ~ I was very full from two tacos as each tacos comes packed with protein and veggies Cons: - None that I can think of Overall: - I really enjoyed my meal at Forastero and, if I find myself in Old Town again, will definitely be back
Forastero has daily specials (Taco Tuesday is $10 for 2 tacos + rice and beans), is BYOB with no cork fee, sells sandwiches and bibimbap bowls in addition to their tacos, AND has a whole section of the menu dedicated to vegan options -- this is a place that anyone can enjoy for a quick bite or a chill sit-down meal with a couple of friends. The Go Fish and Esta Camaron tacos I had were great, although if I had to pick one I'd go with the latter -- the shrimp is very flavorful and made for a unique-tasting taco. But the highlight of my meal was definitely the kimchi fries. The combination of seasoning, kimchi, and cheese was incredible. We didn't order them with the pork belly, but I'm sure that would have been a great addition as well (although they're still super filling without the meat). My friend and I did split a bottle of wine to go along with the meal, but I promise I'd still be this complimentary of the food without it.
