This specific location has been poorly run for years. I live in coconut grove so I keep trying to give it a chance but seems like they need new management. Shelves are often empty and produce is highly priced but a lot of it is rotting on the shelf at full sticker price. Staff is never very nice - particularly at the deli/hot food bar. There always seems to be a roof leak??? Idk, they market themselves as a high end fresh market and everything is so marked up but the experience doesn’t match up. I will say, the south miami location is superb - the way it should be run. THAT location makes sense.

I had an extremely frustrating checkout experience at The Fresh Market that highlights a serious operational issue. I chose a checkout line that was nearly empty, expecting a quick purchase. When I got to the register, I found out the machine only accepted tap payments—no chip insert, no swipe, and no option for manual entry. My credit card is a standard card that supports chip and swipe, but not tap. In other words, the register could only process the one method my card does not support. This created a completely avoidable problem. Instead of having a fully functional checkout system, the store had an active register that could not process common payment methods. Despite this, the lane was open with no signage or warning. I was repeatedly told to “just tap,” even after explaining multiple times that my card does not have that capability. At that point, I was left with two unreasonable options: wait for someone to open another register or move to a different line with several people already waiting. Meanwhile, another customer attempted to go ahead of me simply because her payment method might work at that register, which only added to the frustration. There are some basic expectations that were not met: - A checkout register should support standard payment methods (tap, chip, or swipe). If it cannot, it should not be open. - If a register is limited to tap-only, there must be clear signage before customers enter the line. - Staff should listen and respond appropriately instead of repeating instructions that do not apply to the situation. This setup puts the burden of a store equipment failure directly onto the customer, which is not acceptable. This is not the first time I’ve encountered unusual checkout issues at this location, but this experience was particularly poorly handled. If a register only accepts tap, it needs to be clearly labeled—or better yet, closed—until it can support standard payment methods. This is a preventable issue that reflects a lack of basic operational oversight.
