Although we’ve always used this place as our local fish and chip shop, today’s visit has really upset my wife. The chap behind the counter refused an Ulster Bank note, despite it being legal tender in the UK. It wasn’t just the refusal iit was the rude way he said he had the “right to refuse it”. If he was unsure, he could have simply said he wasn’t comfortable taking it, the same way some shops are cautious with larger notes like £50, but this was a £5 note, and there was no need for the attitude. Sadly, not the sort of place we’ll be visiting again. I don't like writing a bad review but this really pushed me over. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Hi RM, Thank you for your review. I politely explained to your wife that we do not accept Irish banknotes. I was then informed that I had to accept the note because it was “legal tender”. I simply explained that this is not the case and that, as a business, we are entitled to decide which payment methods and banknotes we accept. The reason for our policy is straightforward: if I accept a note that my suppliers and other local businesses will not accept from me, it creates unnecessary difficulties for the business. Whilst I appreciate that this was frustrating for your wife, we simply explained our policy and declined the note. We stand by that decision. It is disappointing to receive a 1-star review over a disagreement about payment methods rather than the quality of our food or service. Kind regards, Frydales

We absolutely love deals, it’s always our go to if we fancy a chilly tea! They always do half price on something everyday which is very rare to see in a chip shop these days, we do miss the half price fish and chips though Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Picked up sausage and bettered sausage, with chips, today - Saturday lunchtime. Chips were terrible - must have been cooked hours before serving; shrivelled, dry and all 'dog-ends' with no real plump chips. They tasted as though the oil had been used well past it's fry-by date. Very disappointed. Service was pleasant though. Chip shops are usually busy Saturday lunchtimes - it's clear why this one wasn't; I was the only customer at the time. Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

Hi Richard, thanks for your feedback. Saturday lunchtimes are actually one of our quietest shifts, as no one is at work, especially with the recent sunny weather, so it’s not unusual for things to be slower than expected. That said, chips should still be fresh, so I do apologise if they came across a bit dry on your visit. I do want to clarify that our oil was freshly changed, so it certainly wasn’t “past its fry-by date” as suggested. We’re very strict on that side of things. It sounds like you caught us at a quiet moment rather than seeing us at our best. We’d much rather you spoke to us at the time so we could sort it there and then, as we’re always happy to replace anything you’re not happy with. Appreciate you mentioning the service.
