This is the best spot near Oakland Convention Center. Luckily you can degust Vietnamese cuisine. Clients may eat nicely cooked broth and tasty bun mam at Fung Wong Bakery.
The enjoyable service is its considerable advantage.

A great inexpensive place for delicious banh mi made fresh to order. The owner and staff are very friendly. Next time I'll try the soup. It's at the back of a little mini mall but worth taking the extra step to track it down.

It's open, I was there an hour ago. The service is very warm and friendly, and English is spoken. Adequate parking in lot, sketchy street parking. Greats soups and bahn mi that is the freshest around, and inexpensive.

tl;DR - The reincarnation of Fung Wong isn't much of a bakery anymore. Very good noodle soups (try the Bun Mam!) and Banh Mi. --------------------- Tatered sign that says re-opening ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) has been hanging for over a year. I asked the cashier and he told me the current owners are totally unrelated to the old Fung Wong Bakery. Now with more savory dishes like Noodle Soups, Rice plates ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) in addition to Banh Mi ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ). It's one of the few places around that I've seen Fresh sugar cane juice (Nuoc Mia) on the menu ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) Contrary to their name, under the new ownership, there doesn't seem to be much baking going on ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) and the stacks of moon cakes were from Cam Huong ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) Bakery misnomer aside, I came in after seeing the large Bun Mam Mien Tay banner next to their Re-Opening one ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ). I've been looking for Bun Mam in the Oakland / SF area that rivals what you can get in San Jose and so far, this has come the closest. The broth is dark and clear with the requisite garlic chives sprinkled on top ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ). From the clarity, I wasn't expecting much, but this had a moderate funkiness. Definitely the most I've tasted in any Oakland version of Bun Mam, though definitely pales vs. South Bay versions. If you want to amp things up, ask for mam tom (SUPER Funky fermented shrimp paste ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) and the hot sauce ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ;), if they aren't brought to your table! Toppings includes fish, shrimp, roasted pork including some bone on pieces and crispy pork skin (!! yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ). Eat that skin before it soggifies!! The one thing I was disappointed in was the garnish plate which just had mint, cabbage, jalapenos and sprouts ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) with no banana blossom or other herbs like you got with the Bun Mam at Soc Trang or other places. The other soups I've tried Bun Rieu ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) and Bun Ca Kien Giang ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) have also been very good. The one Banh Mi I've tried was pretty good too. I had the Banh Mi Dac Biet ($3.75) which often is a cold cut combo (ham, headcheese, pork roll), but here they kick things up with some Xa Xiu (aka Viet Char Siu) in addition to the usual cold cuts ( yelp.com/biz_photos/fung… ) My new favorite non-Pho Vietnamese noodle soup joint in the area.
