Not many know that Gafoorkas Thattukada in Al Qusais serves pazham kanji. Those who do know throng the place before noon because they stop serving it after 11am.
I had to rush there to get myself a bowl, and was I glad I did! I am doubtful if I can convey in words what I felt. The kanji was simple, yet extremely flavorful and satisfying. The accompaniments included kappa puzhukku (mashed tapioca), onakka meen curry (dry fish curry), onakka meen chammandi ( a dry condiment of fish and coconut), tenga chammandi (ground coconut with spices), and lemon pickle. I was immediately transported back home with the first slurp. The kappa was so soft that it almost dissolved in the water and the chammandi was tangy and spicy.
If you are craving for a feel of Kerala on any given day, be sure to head to Gafoorkas Thattukada.
But reach there before 11, and most importantly, it only costs 10AED (as of last week).
Needless to say, this time, not only was my tummy happy, but wallet too.?
