I spent some of the best moments in my life in the Garage. No, it isn't a five star restaurant; however , it was the patrons that made it so grand. The service was great and the atmosphere divine. I forgot any woes from the workday week as soon as I hit the door and entered the magic. My best friend and I looked forward to the next Garage adventure every week .David's mother insisted on coming along to drive us home and she was hysterical. Not hysterical as joining in but hysterical in her naivete'. My friend died in 1996 at the age of 27. I came back to the Garage once because he asked me to do a shot in his honor. I left the area not long after that. Over the years I have always said that I would come back for one more shot if I ever had the chance. I am so sorry to hear that The Garage has closed. It was infinitely more than just a bar. It was like coming home for some. It was over the rainbow where no one would judge you and no one would hurt you. Everyone was accepted. I feel as if something very important has died. Goodbye old friend.

The Garage is a dirty hole. Being from San Francisco, I was taken aback by the inhospitality of the staff. They seem ashamed of being Gay and afraid. The place has no windows and many of the patrons "sneak in" through the back door. I went with a friend. He had a backpack. The doorman told him he could not come in with it. My friend, good naturedly, offered to have it searched. The doorman said no, and that he could leave it at the front door but that it "could be stolen". I was livid and gave him a piece of my mind. I first went to the Garage 20 or more years ago. Thinking it was the only Gay Bar in Norfolk, I returned when I was in town; NEVER AGAIN. It smells of urine and smoke.
