On my last evening in Montevideo, some Uruguayan friends and I went out to Garcia. The food was not great - the steaks and the lamb were overcooked. But the real problem was that we left feeling taken advantage of. I was the only one who wanted a glass of wine with dinner so I asked Diego, our waiter, for a glass of red. He said they only had small bottles and recommended one. He did not show me the wine list or mention the price. I should have asked - but I was following the lead of my friends, who told me later that they trusted that the waiter would suggest a reasonably priced bottle. The half bottle turned out to cost 1700 pesos (USD$43). It wasn’t even very good and had obviously been stored poorly. Even though I was with Uruguayans, the waiter saw my request for a glass of wine as a chance to rip off a foreigner. Truly unprofessional and unseemly behaviour. Take your chances eating here.
