Gion Rohan takes its name from a playful twist on Nawate-dori, the street on which it stands: the Japanese words ‘nawa’ and ‘te’ become ‘rope’ and ‘hand’ in English; their opening syllables entwined in hiragana to form ‘Rohan’. Had a lovely meal ar Gion Rohan. Assorted sashimi, corn tempura, beef croquette, grilled unagi with Japanese peppercorn, chicken leg, with negi, grilled pork, their house specialty mackerel sando and a little treat caramel flan for dessert. Staff is friendly, welcoming and attentive, there's an English menu and the chef on the grill speaks perfect English. They accompany you to the door and watch you leave which was a first for me. Great experience, I wish I had more time in Kyoto to visit again. Price per person: ¥10,000+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Great dinner spot in Kyoto. Everything was delicious! Wagyu was perfectly cooked and the blue fin tuna sashimi was like butter, so soft and tasty. Loved the atmosphere and all the different designs as well. Staff were nice and friendly and the establishment is foreigner friendly too. Best dinner we’ve had in Japan so far! Price per person: ¥6,000–7,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

We were blown away by the food and hospitality at Gion Rohan. In particular I’d recommend the assortment of sashimi and wagyu steak, it was the best we tried in Japan. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
