Inside one of the nicer malls in northern Dallas (the stores are better thought out here than in Willow Bend), has this Churromania outlet - and this one is probably the closest one to Dallas. I have never given the impression to anyone that Churromania would have gourmet offerings - and if anyone thought there would be gourmet offerings inside an American suburban mall, then bless his soul. Especially when it comes to churros which is basically a street food offering in many Spanish-speaking countries. However, this being Dallas, it's definitely on the exotic or unique side which is where my excitement comes from - the lack of something that is a street staple somewhere else. And if you look up Churromania's locations in Florida, their home base, you can see that they're widely loved, with 4 1/2 stars on Yelp. Now the question is why? Because if you ever had churros before, then you know this is one of the better ones anywhere - perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside. And certainly not just dry and crispy like some other places around town. People love it with Nutella or caramel drizzled on top, or just plain, with sugar. You can go with churros stuffed with flavors, such as guava, which is their invention. I've never been the one for stuffed churros since I'm a traditionalist - preferring to go with sugar only and having hot chocolate to dip it into. But I must admit that sometimes I do prefer the Nutella drizzled on top. And I'm all intrigued by their churro ice cream sandwich where they make the buns out of rolled churros and in between the two churros, they put in the ice cream. But if you never had churros before, then sure you may not care for this place. While churros is of a sweet domain, this place has also recently tried to branch into the savory with the churro dog, another one of their invention. I have never had it but fast food lovers may love it - the same type of people that love hamburgers with Krispy Kreme donuts or Cronuts or those type of things. I don't believe it would be bad - and I'll try to venture out to try it next time. One thing that does make me happy about this place is that they sell tequeños too - and these Venezuelan cheese stick is the most authentic and best ones around that I have found in Dallas. Better than Zaguan and any other place that sells it from any point of sale. It's unfortunate that they're out in the suburbs and I can only hope they branch out deeper into Dallas.

My Miami transplant friend, on making a special trip to a bad mall, was nostalgic for the culinary bounty of his former residence. This Miami based chain makes sense - crispy fried dough dusted with sugar and cinnamon.   In Texas we call it a funnel cake. "Do you know they serve a churro hot dog here?"  My friend informed wide eyed with joy.   You say tomato, I say fast food.   But the tired working class older Latinas managing the counter in this gringo church of capitalism believed in the wares.   One preferred the caramel filled roll, one preferred the hot dog.   One churro cannot be bought, just 6 or more.  "You're supposed to walk around and snack on them."  My friend reminisced. With all his excitement I was expecting something more gourmet and well crafted, but it tasted okay, if with the cheap ingredients of fast food, and a distant after taste of old grease. I've definitely been spoiled with better churros, and you should too.

Haha, okay..I guess they are new, but they need to get it together.  My daughter sees the place and tells me she'd like to try a churro.  I'm already cringing because it's near Aunty Anne's, Paciugo, Dippin Dots... basically tons of dessert places that would be great options.  But no, she wants to know what a churro is.  So I hesitantly walk over there and try to see the menu, but unfortunately they decided that  scrolling menu would be a cute idea, so I have to wait until the 10 pages of scrolling items pass on the screen to see what I want to order.  All I really wanted was a churro stick. A single one.  Being that it was for my daughter who just had a full dinner.  I don't see one on the scrolling screen menu thing.. so I walk up to the register where there are 2 employees.  Once they see me, I KID YOU NOT.. the begin to basically play "Not It!" to determine who was going to take my order.  I guess the guy lost, because he was the unlucky fellow.  I asked him kindly if they just sold one churro, rather than all the packs of 5 or 6 in the display case.  I then told him it was for my little one who wouldn't be eating more than a few bites anyway.  He tells me that they do and rings me up.  $5. OMG... for one? Ugh. I guess this place will be out of business soon with those prices.  We wait off to the side for nearly 10 minutes for our order of one churro! He gives me the churro... turns out this is not your average churro.  This thing looks like a blimp.  It's huge and it's spilling out chocolate.  Oh great, I sure did not ask for chocolate, nor something as big as the Hindenburg.  When we sat down, it was so terrible. Crispy and the chocolate was so messy spilling out of it. I basically wasted money because I only let my daughter have a small bit of it since that was my intention all along.  My daughter liked it and would probably rate it a 4 if this was her yelp account. But kids are weird, they would pour kool aid powder straight into their mouths if you let them. So don't trust their opinions, lol. I really should have gone to complain but I was just not in the mood to watch the teeny bopper employees play "rock, paper, scissors" to determine who was going to work that day.  I def don't see this place sticking around for long.
