It is always a shame when the service mars the efforts of the kitchen. I visited Grille 39 for a business dinner on a corporate trip to Indy recently since the restaurant was located at The Renaissance in Carmel and - if nothing else - it is remarkably convenient location if you are staying at this or a neighboring hotel. The amenities are opulent, most notably the Bar area which boasts some fantastic bartenders. Sadly, the service the Bar offers is in deep contrast to the dining area and it is largely due to the leadership/management of Grille 39. Our group of 40 was served by a single server named Joel that deserved better. Drinks took ages to arrive. Plates arrived in haphazard fashion. There was zero balance to the timing because Joel was running for his life for two hours. This is inexplicable for a hotel of this size - get it together Renaissance. It is a real shame too. The kitchen is among the best in the hotel industry. As a starter Salad, I when with the Classic Cesar which is a run of the mill rendition featuring chopped Romaine, shaved Parmesan flakes, Croutons, tossed in a classic Caesar Dressing. There was nothing to complain about as the ingredients were plenty fresh but there was no real pop to the combination. The Filet Mignon, however, was splendid. Cooked to a precise medium-rare with the perfect amount of char on the outside and a juicy/succulent interior. Even the seasoning was applied expertly and I must admit that this may be the best Steak I have ever had at a mid-level hotel. Chef Erik Kemeny can take pride in his team's ability to put together one hell of a beefsteak. I was very impressed. Truth be told, both Joel and Erik deserve more than the 3 stars I can award considering the experience. Hopefully, adjustments will be made in the future in order for their considerable efforts to be fully realized.
