I went there with my girlfriend and I had just got laid off from work, and we had a nice breakfast and I'm the middle of reading the Hispanic buser asked me if I'd like coffee and I asked well how much is it to he said no it's gracias I'm like yeah??? He said yes, so if course I Said ok, that was great I thought, well then I seen a $5 charge on my bill so it's not like I just got laid off or anything (just trying to make light of it) but I seen dude say it was no charge and the server was like I don't know didn't try to Even ask him if he told us that, and then the server Said while ordering do you want those potatoes with everything or just by then selves I Said well what's everything and her told me I'm like sounds good but all of that had a step charge too to an already almost $20 plate of food sure enough there was that charge too. I would have still gotten them I might have even got the coffee but I was lead to believe the fixings for the potatoes might be included i was given no reason to think so, and the coffee thing that just turned me off completely kinda sucks cause the food was good but the sneaky way to get a few extra bucks seemed shady I won't be returning Food: 5 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4

Great breakfast spot downtown. The grits are delicious. Recommend the chicken apple sausage over the turkey sausage. It can get busy. Fun atmosphere. Service: Dine in Meal type: Breakfast Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Buttered Grits

I was in Portland for a conference I was managing on May 3&4, and my flight back home wasn't until the evening of Sunday, May 5. I checked out of my hotel at noon and went looking for somewhere to have brunch. Unlike DC, Portland does not have a bustling downtown brunch culture, so most spots were closed. I googled brunch spots near me and saw Grits N' Gravy was a short walk. I arrived and saw that people were outside waiting for tables. I went in to put my name on the list and was told that I could sit at the bar. The hostess was very friendly and informative. They were rocking classic, old school RnB hits and I was immediately offered coffee. One thing I can say about Portland is that the coffee was always good and this was no exception. I looked at the menu and wanted everything. I was so sick of hotel food and "fine dining." Nothing l'd eaten in Portland before then had really blown my skirt up. The gentleman sitting next to me was eating chicken and waffles which looked good and he assured me that they were delicious. But, I was planning to see a movie before heading to the airport and didn't want to fall asleep. Waffles always make me want to go to sleep. I don't eat eggs, so I ended up ordering everything a la cart. I had fried catfish, made from scratch corn beef hash and fresh fruit. Everything was "torch," as the youngins say. The best food I had in Portland!! The catfish was seasoned and fried to perfection and the hash was so good. The fruit was fresh and ripe. If I'm ever in Portland again, I'm coming back.
