Perhaps we made a mistake in choosing the tasing menu for our meal. We had been advised by friends that the tasting menu was excellent, with a lot of variety, and substantial portions. And so...we chose the tasting menu. We had been prepared to have excellently prepared food, good service and nice ambience. For the most part - we did. The food WAS good, it was exquisite, in fact. The service was excellent. The ambience was fine - save for the lack of cloth tablecovers, and the uninspiring music which was a bit too loud. But still...we were disappointed. Why?? When one chooses to enjoy a tasting menu at a chef's restaurant one expects to be wowed with food that is different, new, out of the ordinary. The food we were served was good, excellent - but not new, not inspired, not different. The usual breads and spreads were served as part of the starters - with tuna sashimi and carpaccio as the less common items. But still, both those items are found on nearly every chef's restaurant menu. The rest of the items followed suit: delicious but nothing new. Sweetbreads, one of my favorite cuts of meat, were used inside of deep fried cigarim...and to my mind that was a WASTE of really good meat. Sweetbreads, when cooked right, are tender morsels, which "pop" in your mouth and are not excessively chewy or tough. Frying them inside of hard crusty pastry rendered the meat chewy and slightly tough and stringy. The service was good -- BUT -- we had to request water to drink along with our wine, and all the varous items were brought out to us in quick succession - far too quickly for our ability to eat and enjoy and rest a bit between courses. The portions WERE substantial and in the end we realized we could not eat it all. We did request to take home what we were unable to eat - a request that was accommodated readily, after all, we HAD paid for that food! Desserts were equally uninspiring - and while, yes, I know, desserts are meant to be sweet and to have sugar in them - which is fine - but these desserts were so loaded with sugar that all I could taste was ... sugar. All in all, I had been looking forward to trying Hachatzer for a long time and when I finally did...I was rather disappointed. However, we will go again in the future but this time we will order from the regular menu.
