I've been coming to the Half Shell on Mendenhall since the mid nineties. Since new ownership took over, this place has, sadly, gone way downhill. I ordered Cajun Fish tacos for pickup today (I have had this item on many, many occasions over the years). I got back to the office and discovered what appeared to be only one fish taco (there are supposed to be two). Having picked up the top taco I discovered another beneath, but they were so tiny there only seemed to be one. The quality was as minimal and unimpressive as the tacos. Also, I substituted the gumbo for beans and rice: zero seafood and meat in the gumbo: no shrimp, no crawfish, and no sausage----this happened the last time I came for lunch (and a couple previous times there was close to zero fish/sausage) but I overlooked it since I've had the gumbo soooo many times over the years. Last, when I walked in it smelled like I was entering a locker room. The air stank of what seemed to be soaked carpeting and wet floors with a slight hint of old, stale, spilt beer. Very sad: a Memphis staple is gone. (And the one in Germantown shouldn't even be called the Half Shell, as it is a completely different restaurant with different menu, etc.) I won't be coming back...
