Before visiting Hamajin, we were debating whether to go to a fancy unagi restaurant in downtown Nagoya or try a special place that popped up in my nearby Google search. We decided on the latter, which was pretty close to where we were staying. I must say, this little adventure was worth everything—the search, the wait (we arrived 30 minutes before it opened), and the anticipation. Simply put, this was the best unagi experience I’ve ever had, far better than any I’ve had in luxury malls. There are two reasons for this: one, the warm hospitality from the welcoming owner; and two, the unforgettable taste of the freshly grilled unagi. You wouldn’t call it a restaurant—it all looked “temporary.” The kitchen was in a truck, the grill was in a container next to the truck, and the eating area was a shelter on a rocky field, which made it really special. It’s a one-man operation where the waiter, chef, cashier, and digital marketer (he asked us to follow him on Instagram ;D) are all the same person. But everything is well-organized. I stood in the container where the owner grilled the unagi, and witnessing the whole process added a lot of fun to the dining experience. The slightly charred unagi offered a crisp, smoky taste, and the unagi sauce added a savory richness to the meat. Even the sauce-soaked rice became irresistible—I finished the biggest set all by myself and still wanted more. There are three things I regret: 1. I could only eat one set for a meal 2. We only stayed in Toyoake for 2 days 3. I didn’t asked for the owner’s name 300% recommended!! Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
