ended my richmond day trip with the foodies with this place. parking is relatively easy to find as it's in the strip mall with walmart. we also found a cute japanese snack shop AFTER we finished eating - our wallets are thanking us lol. seeing that this is a hk-style cafe - a and i were in our elements whereas s was like just order whatever. we were there pretty early and was basically seated right away. we ordered the mini special sets - the signature baked pork chop on rice and the black bean sauce beef chow mein (the crunchy kind). we had added a hk staple street food - the steam rice roll with fish shui mai with mixed sauce. service was decent - i thought - for a hk-style cafe. they came back several times during our meal to refill/check on our tea and we grabbed someone pretty quickly to order. the food came out fast too - everything was hot and noms when it arrived; even the baked dish, which usually takes the longest. the pork chop rice - what can i say. it's one of my favourite dishes and you cant rly go wrong with this. it was tomato-y and cheesy; it also had the typical pineapple bits in it, which made it that much more authentic. the pork chop was also already cut so you dont need to cut it yourself. the chow mein - the noodles were crispy and it had the right amount of sauce for it to soften the noodles. the noodles weren't too soggy after the sauce/beef sat on it for a while. the street food combo was the highlight - the mixed sauce was a perfect ratio. the steam rice rolls were perfect and the fish shui mai was actually fishy - not in a bad way ofc. im not a big fan of sesame sauce but i found this one bearable; it could also be that it tasted more peanuty than sesamey? it's a solid hk-style cafe that i'd prbly go back with my parents lol
Happy Day is your typical Hong Kong style cafe in the heart of Richmond. This was my first time visiting this location and I had never been to the previous Richmond location before this. All HK cafes have about a similar menu with plenty of options: curries, noodles, sandwiches, light snacks and an assorment of HK style coffees and teas. One thing to  mention....if you're looking to eat healthy here, this is NOT the spot for you. For myself I got the chicken curry w/ rice. And for the table we split the fried wontons and the lunch meat sandwich w/ butter. The chicken curry was just alright. I was starving so I scarfed a lot of it down, but I didn't love that they put a ton whole onion chunks in there. The chicken tasted a bit raw and when I cut into it, there was a tad bit of pink. I will not be ordering this again. What I did really like was the fried wontons and the lunch meat sandwich. The sandwich had a huge slab of butter on the side that you put into the sandwich and wait for it to melt. My arteries are clogging just remembering it. I mean, you can't deny that butter makes everything taste really good. And that sandwich was freaking delicious. This place's service was just meh, but after reading the reveiws, I came in expecting the worst. Our server basically came to take our order and payment and that's about it. I'm not really basing this place on service. Glad I tried this place to say I've been, but will likely not return.
Love the pineapple bun sandwiches which is quite unique with a number of choices and not usually found eleswhere. For the price of less than CAD 9 after tax it's a great deal.
