I was sad to hear this place closed especially since it was a short uber ride down from my company's midtown location. I did like the pickles and the flavor of the pastrami. This place cuts it larger, and i may have ordered  a half a pound just to nibble on for my flight back to SF. It was not the classic pastrami like Katz's but it was still good.

Once I discovered they were closing for good I made the effort to go and try all things on the menu because why the hell not! I pretty much made it a mission to go as many times as I could. The verdict- some of the best sandwiches ever. Pastrami sandwich: My first pastrami sandwich ever and at least from this sandwich and I think I'm in love. It tastes basically like a thicker, "meatier" version of corned beef. Pair that with soft bread and spicy mustard, this is perfection. Now every other place I have pastrami at has this to top. Meatball hero: again, amazing. Its somewhat spicy, meaty, and tender. Everything you could want. Apricot chicken: wonderful. Juicy meat. Pairing with the sour cream was incredible. Now that I know how amazing this place is, I'm really going to miss it. If only I'd known about it earlier......

I went into Harrry & Ida's expecting NY's best pastrami, I walked out slightly disappointed.  I ordered the Pop's Sandwich, a generous helping of hand sliced pastrami, pickled cucumber salad, fresh dill and  anchovy mustard overflowing on a club roll.  At a price point of $19, the serving size was appropriate. The meat was moist, tender, and sliced by hand .  But the pastrami was lacking a depth of flavor.  I think the recipe tries to be too unique and strays too far away from traditional pastrami.  It lacks that distinct brined/salty beef flavor with a peppery crust seen in more traditional recipes.  I did enjoy the pickled cucumber and fresh dill as a contrast to the meat.  The anchovy mustard, was lost in the array of flavors. The fast casual atmosphere of the restaurant is enjoyable.  It has the feel of an early 1900s Jewish Delicatessen run by hipsters. While Harry & Ida's unique take on pastrami is worth a try, it is hardly the best pastrami in NY.  It isn't the best Pastrami in the LES.
