I’m leaving Tokyo in a few days and it’s a good time to visit some of my neighborhood hangouts which have made my Tokyo experience so enriching in the past 6 weeks. Tonight, I headed back to Hashinokuchi, my neighborhood super-izakaya/ bistro. Run by Hashinokuchi san and his wife, this beautiful restaurant turns out seasonal plates that are classically anchored into Japanese cuisine, but add a touch of influence from their travels. We enjoyed rare, super high end beef like Kumamoto Aso Akauchi (aged 50 days) slaughtered by one of Japan’s top butchers in Shiga; Tachiuo shioyki; takomeshi; smoked gizzards and chicken liver (amazing!) and seasonal vegetables like the different types of daikon. We even had a Taiwanese influences Lu rou with Renkon. The sake list is outstanding, packed with seasonal sakes, and if you are a craft beer fan, they even stock a Brewpunk Dortmunder. I love this place - the chef/owner is clearly very talented, the food just punching way above its weight. It deserves a wider audience, really, even in the sleepy neighborhood it is located in. If you’re in Tokyo, please visit!
