I didn’t realise how clear my memory still was but it was more than twenty years ago. Back then, I was staying in one of the lorong near Jalan Sungai Nibong in Teluk Intan. Life was simple. Afternoons were slow, humid, and filled with the distant echo of the school bell. And almost every day, around the same time, I would hear it. The soft puttering sound of a motorbike. She would appear from the corner, riding carefully on her motorbike, using one leg pushing her father’s pushcart from behind. The cart wasn’t fancy — just metal, glass panels slightly fogged from condensation, and inside, large containers of dark amber luo han guo drink. Sweet. Herbal. Cooling. Perfect for the heat. They would set up near the school area, just in time for dismissal. Students in uniforms would swarm around the cart, coins clutched tightly in their hands. I was one of them sometimes — sweaty from the walk home, grateful for a cold plastic bag of that sweet drink. I didn’t think much about it then. To me, she was just the girl helping her dad. She moved quickly — tying the motorbike, adjusting the cart wheels, wiping the counter, scooping ice, pouring drink after drink with practiced rhythm. No complaints. No drama. Just work. Now, looking back, I see something I couldn’t see as a teenager. Discipline and responsibility. Every afternoon, without fail, she showed up. Rain clouds gathering? She showed up. Exams season? She showed up. Heat unbearable? She showed up. More than twenty years later, when I met her again as a successful entrepreneur, confident and composed, it suddenly connected. The operational efficiency. The instinct for timing and location. The understanding of customer flow. She had been running “after-school peak-hour operations” long before she ever had a storefront. And I realised something that day. While many of us were just passing time in our teenage years, she was already building character. Already building stamina. Already learning business fundamentals without knowing it. When she talks about hard work now, she doesn’t romanticise it. Because she remembers the motorbike. She remembers the weight of the cart. And somewhere in my mind, I still see that afternoon sun in Anson, the narrow lorong near Jalan Sungai Nibong, and a young girl riding slowly toward the school crowd — not knowing that she was quietly riding toward her future. Funny how memory works. Sometimes success doesn’t begin in a grand moment. Sometimes it begins at noon. With a motorbike. And a cart of luo han guo. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Dropped by Hawayi in Teluk Intan for a quick bite and tried a few of their offerings. The Lo Han Guo drink was refreshing and cooling, a perfect choice for the hot weather. Tried the ABC as well, the ice melted too quickly, likely due to the scorching heat. I think the red beans they used are the premium one, which is good. The laksa had a noticeable fishy smell—which some might enjoy for authenticity, but it may not be for everyone. Personally, it was acceptable, though I felt the portion of ‘lai fun’ noodles could have been more generous to balance the broth and the price tag. On the bright side, the serving time was fast, likely because it wasn’t peak hour yet. Service was smooth and efficient, making it a decent stop for a light meal.
