The main entree is the chicken skewers or yakitori in Japanese. Here you’ll notice a range of different choices from just chicken on a stick to pork and innards. For all you health nuts out there, worry not, for there are plenty of veggies to go with your protein of choice. At first look, you might mistake the menu for being one-dimensional, but look further and you’ll be delightfully surprised to find some delicious homemade options. Depending on what mood I’m in, I’ll go with the steamed veggies with a miso and mayo sauce that is out of this world. In times when I’m feeling like a shot of protein, I’ll go for the many delicious beef dishes available, particularly the succulent roast cut with a sweet brown sauce to add some flavor. No restaurant with a counter bar is worth its salt unless it has an array of alcoholic drinks available, and Heizo’s lineup (literally) is nothing short of jaw dropping. If you’re able to lift your head up between munching on your favorite yakitori, you’ll quickly notice a myriad of distinctive bottles on shelves above the bar. Unlike a traditional bar in the West, Heizo offers a ‘bottle keep’ service where patrons can purchase a liter of shochu and store it for later at no charge. That’s right! You’re own personal bottle on tap until the last drop. There’s even a pen so you can personalize the bottle. While the bottle keep is reserved for Japan’s infamous potato liquor, shochu, sake connoisseurs can imbibe on the owner’s cultivated selections. The man behind the grill with an uncanny memory, able to recall any customer’s name as well as personal preference, makes sure all customers feel welcome. No superhero is complete without a sidekick, and Heizo is no exception. Busy as a bee, she makes sure all the prep work is done and is quick to pour your favorite drink or whip up a healthy side dish of veggies. If you’re looking for a local flavor around town or would like to taste some refreshing sake, then the man behind the grill twirling chicken on sticks will appease even the most eager of appetites at Heizo.
