For 43 years, Herongate Barn Dinner Theatre has been serving homestyle food along with a night of fun entertainment. The venue used to be a dairy farm, then it served as a location for auctions and barn dances until it was converted into a dining and theatre venue. It's a family-run business, and the simple, country-livin' style of cooking defines the menu. No fusion or food trends here!
Dinner always starts with a fresh salad bar, which includes lots of variety (even ambrosia salad!) as well as soup. They served tomato bisque the night I attended. It was good, but was more like a tomato sauce in taste and consistency. If they just threw in some pasta, it would have been great. Instead of eating the full bowl, I dunked fresh bread in it "Italian style" and yup, it really was like pasta sauce!
The main course was served cafeteria-style, where staff scooped servings of a menu of French onion chicken, parmesan smashed potatoes, street corn, sauteed brussel sprouts, breaded sole and tartar sauce, roasted pork loin and apple sauce, apple and cranberry stuffing, and roast beef and gravy. Dessert was also an array plates containing servings of cake, pie and sweets. Coffee and tea is included as part of the meal.
In general, the food was good if you are in the mood for country-style recipes, and you definitely walk away full. While you eat, there is piano and guitar/singing of old-school songs that are perfect for the setting. The theatre show is always a fun comedy, so it's a nice evening out.
