The other day, I was watching a show on how to make a high baller drink. It triggered my thinking about Hi-Ball Restaurant. It is a fully licensed restaurant, so perhaps the alcohol reference was helpful, too. Hi-Ball has been in the River Heights part of Winnipeg for decades. It looks weathered on the outside, but it's much better inside if you choose to dine in. I have only been here once. I don't recall why I came here with a friend. I normally avoid places where it's clearly posted that it serves "Chinese and American dishes" on the side of the building and on the menu. To me, it is an obvious sign that it serves westernized Chinese food. My friend got the kung pao beef. He enjoys spicy food to the point where he is sweating buckets. He loved it, and yes, he did sweat a lot eating it. As for me, I went with beef chow fun in a black bean and garlic sauce. I like flat rice noodles. I don't have black bean and garlic sauce often. Back then, it felt like home and reminded me of my mom's cooking. It was good. We were there on a weeknight. It wasn't all that busy. Staff were pleasant and our food came pretty quickly. There are westernized parts of the menu that I avoid like nobody's business. Chicken balls. Ick! You have your choice of sweet and sour, or honey garlic. Why?! You can also get fries and chicken noodle soup. I find it odd. If I wanted to get these items, I wouldn't come to a Chinese restaurant. That's just me. If you do takeout and want chopsticks, this place charges for each pair. It is one of those odd details that I remember because chopsticks are generally tossed in for free. It's an okay place if you are in the neighbourhood and are hungry. Otherwise, it's not my go-to place for Chinese food. (154)
