Great Fun! Great Service! Really GOOD FOOD! Continuing to search all of Dallas for those "One of a Kind" Burger Joints that would allow me and my lunch companion to BYOD, we found another hidden gem. Hickory House Barbecue has been around since the  Stone Age and has indeed earned its accolades in Dallas Restaurant History. Locate at 600 S. Riverfront Blvd, right down the street from Fuel City and in between Bail Bond Row, this icon of Dallas deserves applause from all aspects of praise. First, I called to make sure that since we are in The Bible Belt, that the owners would not mind us bringing in our own bottle of wine. It's a thing we do, find $5-15 hamburgers and bring in $20-80 bottles of wine to be both Texan and decadent at the same time. Yes, I know. Born in Dallas, we Texans call all be decadent when ever we choose. This place just reeks of flavor, historically AND to all epicureans. Two dining rooms to choose from, the main indoors and al fresco. At this time, there was major road construction going on by the front door, so I chose to park under the shade of the covered parking area to the West side of the building, which makes me believe that some time LOOOONG ago, they may have had service to cars. I must inquire on another visit. But, from the West entrance one walks through many ancient picnic tables and a server station of days dating back before WWll, a time warp indeed. (Let me know if I use the "indeed" too much.) Once entering the main air conditioned dining room, one immediately smells the barbecue. Viewing a spot to watch all the other diners, I picked a booth in the front window. I was greeted by Amy, a server who has such a smile on her face and is not shy at placing her hand on customers shoulders and giving a warm Texas greeting. With gifted hands as only well seasoned servers can do, this woman even can give a 2-4 second back scratch which can make your left foot go up and down. But seriously, this staff is filled with smiles and hospitality that is genuine and invites you back many times over even before you have had you first meal there. When my lunch companion arrived, we opened the bottle of wine, brought our own glasses and proceeded to as Amy for an appetizer plate of one smoked sausage, sliced, with a little dipping sauce on the side. The appetizer plate was there in a matter of 2-3 minutes. Amy kept full attention on our needs while she worked a new party of 8  men, who were there for the quick service, food, check efficiency, while we were the to discuss saving the world. This place reminded me of Mia's on Lemmon Avenue, in that it was a local sleeping Tex Mex restaurant until Jimmy and Jerry met there to discuss Jerry buying the Cowboys and Jimmy taking control. Right after that meeting Mia's novelty became a GO TO place. Let me tell you, that if you want to do business and make a multi- million dollar deal, you will NOT be seen by reporters or any other people from the VC world, which is what makes this place ideal to conduct private conversations. The menu is shocking, I mean by the prices. So low that we both laughed when we saw that for breakfast you can get French Toast for $7.00. The menu includes a daily special, ranging from Monday's meatloaf WITH THREE SIDES!, to Friday's fried fish, to Wednesday's hamburger steak for only $7.99. But staying true to our quest for BYOB burger joints, we ordered burgers. My guest had the #11, an avocado, bacon cheese burger and I just ordered the bacon cheese burger. He ordered onion rings as his side and I had the fried okra.  They grind their own beef. They are very attentive to however you would like your order prepare any way you would like to have it. I can't understand why this place doesn't have the parking lot filled with Uber/Lyft drivers dropping off the people from Thanksgiving Tower, Trammel Crow Center and WeWorks on McKinney. The burgers were a taste of Texas tradition and cooked perfectly. THEN, came the topper, hot, home made peach cobbler ala mode. It was so good that I had to push mine away before I decide to eat the bowl it came in. We left our wine glasses there, knowing that we will be back again soon to see Amy's (or other of the seasoned and spicy wait staff) smiling face. My lunch companion already told me that he will be able to bring clients there for breakfast to disarm them from pretentious white linen breakfast places like the Petroleum Club of Ellen's. All in all, a great day for Texas Americana. If you choose to bring in your own wine, ask Amy for glasses with a smile and she may just bring some out to you. One further note, the TABC allows for them to have a beer licence and still allow for BYOB. It is only when a Texas restaurant has a Class A mixed beverage license, that BYOB is not permitted. Yes, you could bring in your own beer to this place too, but please, respect the owners and for what they paid to get their beer license and buy their beer there. I bet that it is ice cold.
