We had an excellent dinner!! The cold drink, the delicious and abundant food, the first-class service!! This restaurant was an unintentional highlight on my recent trip to Oaxaca. On the night of Nov. 2, as the final day of Dias de los Muertos was coming to close, the area right around Santa Domingo de Guzman was in full swing, the city full of local and out-of-town revelers. My party of 3 arrived at Hosteria de Alcala in search of food and a place out of the crowds to sit down and have a drink. Not knowing the city well and having struck out finding a seat at a few other restaurants and leaving one due to lack of service/rude staff, this place was a culinary oasis! We were seated promptly in the festive courtyard dining room with our drink orders immediately taken by our server and promptly delivered....BIG/strong lime daiquiris and solid pours of well-priced wines. Nice! A fresh basket of warm breads and bread sticks arrived and included these amazing rolls I've only ever had in Oaxaca....little dinner rolls with a bit of cream cheese in the middle and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. I have no idea what these godly creations are called, but they are freakin' delicious!! The ceviche was fresh and serving size plenty for a late night meal. My friend has the veggie lasagna and it too was excellent. Our service was top-notch - friendly and prompt. I really wish I could remember our server's name (remember those big, strong lime daiquiris??......), but every staff member we encountered was personable and professional. I am looking forward to my next visit to Oaxaca. Next time this restaurant won't be accidental, it will be a highly anticipated destination. Ole!!
