Having visited Gozo from the UK for a music festival in Marsalforn, I was walking around the bay by myself as my friends and I were staying in different properties. I saw smoke billowing into the air from the main causeway heading inland. As a BBQ connoisseur, I knew this was not a random fire but something special. I investigated and confirmed my suspicions: they were just setting up for business. This was the last night of the festival and after a heavy penultimate night, a few of the team felt they might not make it out for the finale due to the previous night's antics. When we hooked up a couple of hours later, the subject of food came up. Despite the bay of Marsalforn being packed with good eateries, I told the gang there was a place I had spotted earlier. They trusted me, and we took the two-minute walk past the restaurants to this food truck. The chef was in full motion and immediately offered us samples as we ogled over the offerings. It was love at first sight; my friends and I were sold. We asked how many the mixed grill would serve; the host's honesty was clear: "Maybe two, maybe five, how hungry are you?" We ordered, and even a couple of us added extras due to temptation. The mixed grill was EPIC,. We shared a moment free from knives and forks, eating with our hands—a true elemental moment of breaking bread with family on a beautiful island in the Mediterranean. The protein hit was medical, as if prescribed by a doctor. Those who thought they were done for the weekend were reinvigorated, those who wanted a good hearty munch were fully satisfied, and the bonding between comrades was enhanced tenfold. A moment I wish I had caught on camera. Fast forward a few months and my partner and I wanted to book a holiday away from a freezing English February. We landed on Malta due to my time with the boys being so epic. I suggested a couple of nights in Gozo (so I could go back to Hot Shots and get the pictures missing from my archive) and a couple of nights on the mainland. At the time, we did not know it was Carnival time. We arrived to find Carnival in full swing. Our apartment in Victoria was on the high street and the chaos was beginning as we checked in. In the back of my mind, I was worried the festivities would distract from getting to Marsalforn for Maltese BBQ, but we got immersed in the vibes. Many drinks later, we had seperatly asked locals where to go once the "main" event was done; everyone said Nadur. We arrived on the quieter side of Nadur and worked our way in. I noticed a serious grill in motion as we walked and made a point to say, "If we eat, we eat here.". We got to the main square and were blown away by a side of Carnival we did not expect to find, the sound systems, costumes, and immersive energy reflected the Carnivals we are used to in the UK. We drank, we partied, and eventually, food was a must. She wandered back to where I had suggested originally, but I followed my nose to the other side of the square. As soon as I saw the familiar text on the Hot Shots menu, I felt a tingle. I asked the guys if they were the same crew from Marsalforn and they confirmed. I whipped my phone out and called her, shouting through the amplified noise, "Come back, and take a left when you get onto the square!" and the rest is history. The mixed grill was too much for just the two of us, but the leftovers made it back to Victoria, then on the ferry to the mainland and into the fridge in Valletta. On our last night, those leftovers saved us after a mad night of partying with the grounded floats in the bus station and bar crawling through the streets of the Old Town. When we finally got back to our apartment, Hot Shots saved the day once again. Nothing short of EPIC. Thank you, guys. Sorry for the waffle, but there was a whole backstory to tell!
