For years, Hull Street Blues wa s one of my favorite spots. Dan, Jade, and others did a great job. Today, I walked in after a long hiatus and noticed two dogs in the bar. One standing next to its owner, and a smaller dog held upright in her lap. Clearly, not a service dog. I left disappointed without ordering. Sorry, Dan. Sorry, Jade. Speaking of which .. yesterday while we were looking around for a decently priced and less than overly greased menu for Sunday brunch .. we discovered something of a well kept secret spot down south of Federal Hill and over towards Tide Point where a guy named Dan Macatee has run the Hull Street Blues Cafe for 35 years. He learned about gumbo and red beans and rice down in Slidell LA about 45 years ago and sets up a pretty row of scrambles, tossed potatoes, smoked trout and greens, caesar salad, savory bacon and sausage, baked ham, braised wings and pork loin, biscuits and cakes beside the gumbo and the beans and rice and .. yes .. buttermilk pancakes and french toast for under $20 + drinks and tip! We lingered for at least 1 1/2 hours maybe 2 and before we left the place was rockin' to "You Never Can Tell" by Chuck Berry. Best of all was the brick hearth fireplace and bin of seasoned oak splits that we sat beside .. Dan's youngish daughter Lilly was the true mark of this man Dan Macatee's luck and genius and we will surely go back there to sit at his table and be served by her as soon as we are able.
