Leaving a review here not because of the food but because of the service. We visited the restaurant yesterday, with last minute reservation. At the beginning it seemed okay- we were placed at a table by the window - our waiter Sergei was very sweet. When another waiter, a smaller man called Jean Claude came over to our table the first thing he told us was not ‘hello’ or something similar, but rather ‘you cannot sit here’. He went on to explain that it was reserved for another group and we had to move. The restaurant was not really full and we found it quite odd, but okay we moved. We ordered a starter and a main, starter came after 20 min and the main after 1h and 10 min. A bit long but ok. My partner asked if he could have fries with his dish, the lady waitress said sure and went to order it. Meanwhile he finished his meal and I was nearly done too, so he told her to cancel the fries. She said sure, but then comes Jean Claude again who brought the fries and when we told him it’s fine, we already finished the food, he asked ‘are you sure? I will put it on your bill regardless’. We left shortly after but had really a bad feeling about the treatment of the smaller waiter. I would advise management to have a quick course in how to communicate with guests. I had the oysters and Maine lobster. Only one other table occupied. Food: Oysters were good. Lobster tail may have once been good, but extremely overcooked. Vegetables were again, good quality but poorly cooked. I will attribute this to kitchen being eager to close. Service: I arrived at 1:45 for a late lunch. The system evidently did not register my same-day reservation, so perhaps the online and offline reservation systems need to be better integrated. The male host was visibly incredulous that I wished to eat at this time, though the kitchen was not yet closed. I could tell he wanted me to leave, but I was hungry, so I stood my ground until he seated me next to an incredibly loud table (the only other occupied table) in the middle of the restaurant. I speak good Swiss-German (not the Zurich dialect), owing to the fact that I have been a successfully integrated resident for a number of years. As we spoke, he switched entirely to English. I found this quite impolite, but I understand not everyone in Zurich can speak Swiss-German, especially if working primarily with tourists in a hotel. Perhaps the cognitive load of speaking to an Asian woman in Swiss-German was too much for so late in the afternoon. This is not uncommon in the cities, unfortunately. I ordered the lobster, and he felt the need to remind me of the market price per 100g, though it is clearly listed on the menu. I found that redundant. More helpful would be to list approximate weight of lobster tail on the menu, so this weight can be taken off his shoulders. I made one request for melted butter, and he felt the need to call the kitchen in front of me to check for availability. I would never have done this as front-of-house, and have never seen this done anywhere other than at an American fast food diner or Cantonese dim sum restaurant. Perhaps a hotel in Zurich has different standards, or perhaps he's trying something innovative. I noticed the lights in the aquarium were switched off at 2:30 sharp. Maybe a nod to Swiss efficiency, or management reacting to rising energy costs? Having worked in F&B, this is a classic move when we want to evict guests from premises, but usually we wait >20 minutes before employing it. The female staff member was the one redeeming feature. Friendly and helpful, if withdrawn. I do not blame her. I have spent some years working in F&B, and if I were to be working here, I'd be looking elsewhere. Management: Perhaps the restaurant does not provide reasonable overtime pay or adequate incentives for front-of-house or dishwashers if guests stay past 2:30pm? Either way, out of respect for the employees' time, I did not stay for coffee. Came here on advice from the serviced apartment that I sojourn in while in Zurich, and I will be informing them not to recommend Hummerbar again. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: CHF 100+ Food: 3 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2
