Five stars for the interior designer. One star for my digestive system. As I write this, it's 3 a.m. and I'm conducting a very personal post-dinner review from the bathroom. To be fair, I had been on a 20-hour intermittent fast, and this restaurant was the only thing I ate all day. Draw your own conclusions. Let's start with the good, because visually, Ilaya is stunning. Calling it beautiful would be underselling it. Whoever handled the branding, architecture, and décor deserves an award and apparently had an unlimited budget to work with. The attention to detail is obsessive in the best possible way. The sugar packets are branded. The china is branded. Even the bathrooms look like they were carved from rare granite by Italian craftsmen. Every corner of the place screams "franchise-ready" and serious investment. My only note on the ambiance: for a venue positioning itself as fine dining, linen napkins are a must. It felt like the only detail that was missing. Now for the food. The tabbouleh arrived with enough parsley stems to start a small garden. The muhammara tasted like it was negotiating a peace treaty with spoilage. Nobody at the table touched it, yet nobody from the staff thought to ask why. The crispy chicken liver was actually decent and prepared in an interesting way. Credit where credit is due. The basil lemonade was good. The vine leaves were forgettable. The frakeh nayyeh was barely present. Most dishes felt like they were relying on the restaurant's looks to carry the experience. As for the aftermath, let's just say my stomach and I are currently in a toxic relationship. I can't prove food poisoning, but I can confidently say I've had more enjoyable evenings. My recommendation? Come for the design. Come for tea. Come for shisha. Take photos. Admire the branding. But based on my experience, I wouldn't come here primarily for the food. One final note on service: the waiters were a little too eager to clear plates. Several times, dishes were being removed while there was still food on them. Personally, I prefer staff to wait until a plate is either empty or the guest indicates they're finished. P.S. A French-modern-looking restaurant serving shisha and Lebanese food feels slightly confused, but then again, Lebanon has always had a complicated relationship with identity. Ohhh one thing LOVED the menu can we bring physical menus back pls.. Till the next review—hopefully from somewhere other than a bathroom.
