Wanna have the chance to eat gourmet in a real prison? Meal cooked and served by inmates with superb passion. Book your return cab in advance. Open lunch and dinner. Reservation is a must.

While spending a long weekend in Milan, my husband and I ventured up to InGalera. It is most certainly worth the trip! But, word to the wise... check their website for directions/address and your GPS closely before setting out. We went to the first "InGalera" that popped up in Apple Maps. Bad move on our part! Not the right spot and made us about 30-minutes late for our reservation. Oops! Luckily, they were super accommodating and held the table for us. Once we arrived at the right location, we easily made our way through security and across the prison grounds to the restaurant. Parking is easy and plentiful, and entering the facility was a breeze. I was actually surprised we didn't have to show ID, pass through a metal detector, etc. as the restaurant is in the Bollate jail. Staff are the inmates, working to learn a trade in hopes of integrating back into society and being able to gain employment once released. We were super impressed with their wine list. It was all very affordable and had bottles from several regions through out Italy. We wanted something local and were pleased with the Grumello the maître d' recommended. For dinner, we ordered a ton. The highlights were the camilla and Lardo (a sweet and savory antipasti -- the camilla was a sweet bread/cake and the lardo was a salty cured meat), a pear and cheese risotto, and the nutella tiramisu. While some of the ingredients weren't the "best of the best," everything was beautifully prepared and plated. I imagine it's challenging to get expensive filets, blue fin tuna, etc. etc. at a prison. They really made the absolute best of the ingredients they had to work with. So, before this review gets any longer, I'll leave it at this... The meal was wonderful, the service was top notch, and the worthwhile cause was just the cherry on top! If in Milan and looking for a really unique experience, please be sure to put InGalera on your list.
Very good food. Extremely good service. Very nice location with ample spaces for tables that are well away from each other, so that the level of noise is surprisingly pleasant even if the restaurant is full. Very interesting and commendable project. Interesting to hear the experience directly from the manager who is also very professional and nice
