Located on Ekimaecho in Himeji, Itchora offers a dining experience centered around the local specialty, sea eel, known as anago in Japanese. This restaurant is set below ground level, so diners might find it slightly challenging to locate. The interior provides options for both lunch and dinner, operating throughout the week with evening hours till 22:00 from Monday to Saturday and closing slightly earlier on Sundays.
Visitors to Itchora can expect a variety of sea eel dishes, including sashimi, soup made with eel liver, grilled eel, and even eel tempura. There are also takeaway options, though they may be served cold due to being pre-prepared. Despite this limitation, the takeaway menu is considered reasonably priced by patrons. The ambiance might suffer from modern connectivity issues as some mobile networks might lose signal in the basement space.
While visitor reviews speak highly of certain unique offerings like deep-fried eel bones and other sea eel variations, much of the feedback available is a few years old, leaving current service standards unknown. New diners might appreciate trying the signature finish—an eel rice ball or sushi roll finished off with broth—but they should approach dining with realistic expectations given the absence of recent updates from the owner or recent reviews.

Pronounced “Ichora”, Iccyoura is a Himeji Izakaya that specialises in anago and sake, hidden in the basement of the main shopping street. They don’t have an English menu but the photos are quite self-explanatory, and the servers are helpful. They also serve Asahi draft beer, which tastes great. Pro-tip: The Shirasagi Gozen lunch set was delicious and different, featuring both fresh and seared eel sashimi. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000
