I visited Java Joe today at around 2pm and ordered a matcha latte, specifically asking for it to be made less sweet. I also asked the girl serving me at the counter whether it would be okay if I practised makeup on my friend while having coffee, as I am currently training to become a makeup artist. She told me that it would be fine. I explained that I did not see any issue, as many people use cafés as places to work, study and meet others, and she again said it should be fine. After sitting down, I noticed that the girl who had served me went over and spoke to her colleagues about me doing makeup. Shortly afterwards, a male member of staff approached me and told me that he would call his manager because he thought I might not be allowed to do makeup there. He then called his manager, and after speaking with him, he came back and told me that I was not allowed to do makeup on my friend because it was considered a professional service. He said I could do my own makeup, but not someone else’s. I found the situation disappointing and confusing, especially as I had already asked for permission beforehand and had been told that it would be fine. I was not disturbing anyone, I had purchased drinks, and I was simply sitting quietly with my friend. I felt that the matter could have been handled in a more professional and respectful manner. This was also not my first negative experience at Java Joe. On a previous visit, I asked for my matcha not to be too sweet, and the girl serving me replied, “White chocolate is supposed to be sweet, sweetheart.” I felt this response was dismissive and unhelpful. What disappointed me most was the way the situation was handled. Instead of informing me politely from the beginning, I felt that the staff discussed me amongst themselves before changing their decision. I felt singled out and uncomfortable by the way it was handled. I then spoke to a group of women sitting nearby, who told me that they could not see any issue with what I was doing. While expressing my disappointment, I was then told that I was disturbing customers and was asked to leave, even though I was already preparing to go. I have visited many cafés in the UK and around the world and have never experienced anything like this. I believe customers should be treated with professionalism, consistency and respect. Even if there was a policy against providing makeup services, this could have been communicated clearly and politely from the outset. Because of this experience, I do not intend to return to Java Joe and would like this complaint to be brought to the attention of management. I hope steps are taken to improve customer service and ensure that future customers are treated more respectfully. If I can give 0 I would. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
