Had high expectations but was overall disappointed. First time in Montreal and was our first night and first meal so we thought why not come to a very well known place . Server was friendly and nice . There are no drink or food menus Basically you get recommendations from the servers . We got the lobster spaghetti and the steak. The spaghetti though flavorful was very salty . The steak though cooked perfectly was fatty . For the price we paid for two entrees and 4 drinks I don't think it was worth the price .
Joe Beef's reputation is as thick and rich as the butter they use in their famous lobster pasta. But at the end of the day, you are still tempted to take a bite. It's a special place with many accolades but it is by no means a luxury fine dining experience. Aside from the price-point, this place is ultra-casual, fun and noisy, meant to be enjoyed with a lively group and not the stuffy, pretentious types. It looks small, but there are three different rooms that accommodated plenty of people. Nevertheless, you still need a reservation because it fills up quickly. Also, since the menu is only written in 8pt sans serif on a dimly lit chalk board 100 feet away, you can't pick a meal in the traditional way...so I took the advice of previous reviewers and just let our server (Laura) craft our meal based on what we like to eat and how hungry we were. And to be honest, she nailed it. So, our experience was phenomenal. The food came out in quick but not hurried manner and Laura was even able to recommend a wine in the same way a sommelier would at a fancy-pants restaurant. I'd say that if you are hesitant about what you can/can't eat, or you are not jiving with your server, you may not like it (especially after you get the bill). But it's fun to through caution into the wind once in a while...and they serve fresh fish, meat and produce. So it's not that complicated. And life shouldn't be.
Coming here was the highlight of a trip and even with all the hype, it didn't disappoint. So much to admire. Started meal with oysters that tasted like they just jumped out of the ocean and onto a plate served with amazing fresh horseradish and sauces. Service was outstanding throughout the meal. Followed with a wonderful corn soup with clams ... absolutely amazing and firmly in line with serving fresh ingredients. Terrific and mind blowing good. Went for signature dish of lobster and pasta which is renown. Let's say it was delicious which it was. Unfortunately, I had remorse watching others have duck, rabbit, steak... and bone marrow and other dishes which is my fault for not going in the direction of meat. Pasta is great and I loved my dish but I felt like I didn't get the real experience. Finished with a superb peach dessert that was truly mouth savering with each bite. Since dishes change all the time (I was hoping to try the beer can cauliflower or pea soup or salami plate) and the menu is in French only...one is left to the staff to guide decisions and most people have had great experiences, I loved the meal but wish I could read it online first in advance or had a staff member explain it in detail better. There's always next time and I hope it will be soon, perhaps at a Rangers victory in Bell Center soon.
