Definitely going to miss Riccitello’s when they close later this week. Everything is fresh and delicious, great portion sizes, reasonably priced, and with a classic, old school atmosphere not found anymore. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $20–30

Located off the beaten path, John Riccitello Restaurant is the ground floor of a modest house in a less favored Schenectady neighborhood. You either hear about it from the locals or you find it by pure chance. Once you've been there, it sits near the top of the dining-out list.Call for a reservation; the response is welcoming. Walk in on the spur of the moment; you can expect every effort to find you a place, even when things are busy. The menu is a nice mix of generally simpler Italian dishes. Most meals are served with soup or salad and pasta or potato. A recent dinner had three beginning with a generously sized salad; one of us had the chicken and barley soup (me -- and I did better out of the deal!). Main dishes were shrimp scampi and chicken "Riccitello" -- nicely prepared, large fresh shrimps, lovely tender chicken breasts, deftly seasoned, served with pasta (we all had spaghetti). We're all sort of geriatric; we each took home enough for a generously sized meal the next day.We might have stayed for coffee & dessert, but we're far too replete to do so.The bar is well equipped, and the wine list is not extensive but thoughtful. The per-glass offerings come in small individual-serving bottles -- no need to fear oxidized leftovers from the night before. The bill for four was $85, including wine, starters and main dishes. Service was attentive, and the kitchen didn't keep us waiting on a Sunday evening.
