What a resolution... In the late eighties, I visited Joy King for the first time. The menu also included specialties. We decided to have the rolled langoustines in cream sauce. What a great choice this was at the time, it was really heavenly delicious. With the bill, a warm, moist cloth was first offered to freshen your hands, so wonderfully perfumed, they called it butterfly perfume soap. It was a better Chinese (more expensive) restaurant that others couldn't match. This has always been a reference for us, eating rolled langoustines at Joy King. And so it went on for years, always great! The last few times the warm wipes were replaced by an apparently much cheaper "smell"... No problem, the menu was unchanged. Until a few years ago, people could still enjoy this delicious dish, it was something you couldn't find anywhere, home-made! Today, September 21, '23, a day when the children were at a sports camp, we decided to go back and look for the 'better Chinese' and of course our favorite dish. But I couldn't find anything about the "specialties" on the site. Perhaps a mistake, I thought, but no, the specialties were removed because "too little was taken". Okay, then try something else. We ordered the steamed dim sum as a starter. First a plate was placed on the table with the pre-made lettuce. And oh no, with arugula!! This type of leafy vegetable has a pronounced rubbery taste and thus spoils the taste of real lettuce... well, everyone has their own way. Then the dim sum arrived. I don't know what was in there, scampi, meatball and the third and fourth flavors could not be identified. Fortunately there were three sauces, hot, sweet and soya. All in all, nothing spectacular... So let's hope for our scampi with black bean sauce. An oval plate appeared on the table with 10 scampi, mushrooms (?), carrot, green and red pepper and an oversized ball of curly lettuce with a radish on top (why radish with scampi...). There was no need to wait for the second dish, after all it was for two people... the scampi were not bad, but five of those creatures as a main menu was poor. Also a round dish of fried rice was for two people. Time for a coffee with Grand Marnier and cream, I remember that this used to be the very best one could get, beautifully served in a wine glass. But when I asked the waitress if this was served in a glass with the handle at the bottom and she answered yes, I already knew enough, a strong espresso that is. A coffee that I left because of bric-a-brac! When I asked for the bill, there was no warm cloth like before, only the booklet containing the receipt for €120... a bit much for this experience with two people. According to the site, the restaurant is open until 9:30 PM. At 8 p.m. an older couple came in, they were immediately told that the kitchen was about to close and they could only quickly have a main course, and so it happened. The high star rating really surprises me, there are comparable or even better restaurants that should score higher, even just a few km away and also within reach. I don't claim that the food is bad and the service is friendly and correct, but to call this, as stated on Google Maps, "the best Chinese in Shots and Antwerp" is really a stretch. I prefer to give four or five stars, but if in my opinion something drops in rating I will not give five stars.
