Koukouzina wasn't just one of the best meals we had in Nisyros, it was one of the experiences that reminded us why we always try to seek out authentic, family-run businesses when we travel. Whilst exploring the island, we noticed several organised tour groups stopping at a much larger restaurant further along the seafront beneath the blue canopies. It was busy, hectic and clearly popular with excursion companies. We tend to avoid the places recommended to every tour group and instead look for somewhere with a little more character and connection to the local community. That decision led us to Koukouzina, and we're incredibly glad it did. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel genuinely welcome. The hospitality was everything you hope for when visiting a Greek island: warm, authentic and completely unforced. Rather than feeling like customers passing through, we felt like guests being invited to share a small piece of local life. The food was exceptional. I braved the local specialities, including the cinnamon syrup, traditional cheeses and the wonderfully unique tomato jam. Each dish felt connected to the island's history and culture rather than simply being prepared for tourists. They were also surprisingly addictive! The homemade pita bread deserves a special mention. It was absolutely incredible; fresh, soft and full of flavour. Even the fries were memorable, perfectly cooked and seasoned with a delicious blend of spices that elevated what could have been a simple side dish into something genuinely special. What stood out most was the pride. Pride in the food, pride in the ingredients and pride in Nisyros itself. Throughout our visit we found local people eager to share stories about their island, and Koukouzina embodied that same passion. The staff were knowledgeable, welcoming and clearly cared deeply about preserving and sharing local traditions. The setting was beautiful, the atmosphere relaxed and authentic, and every part of the experience felt genuine. In a world where many tourist destinations can begin to feel commercialised, Koukouzina reminded us why family-run restaurants are so important. Places like this preserve culture, recipes, stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. It was also somewhat bittersweet to learn that many family businesses on the island may not continue when the current owners retire, as younger generations understandably pursue dreams and careers of their own. Experiences like this make you appreciate these places even more while they're still here. Sometimes the best meals aren't found in the places recommended by tour guides. They're found by wandering a little further, taking a chance and discovering somewhere authentic. If you're visiting Nisyros, don't just come here for a meal. Come for the experience, the hospitality and the opportunity to enjoy food prepared by people who genuinely love their island and what they do. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: €15–20
