"The Soup of The Gods
An Essay by: Katy Gamble
The day: Canada Day, two thousand and nineteen (AKA the day my life stood still). The what: Coconut noodle soup. The where: Kanata Noodle House 2. The how: Shea driving us there. Why is this the best soup in the world, the soup of the Gods? Well, that is what I am here to write about today. Not only did it change my perception of soup all together, it changed the very fabric of my life. The depth of flavor, the atmosphere, the sheer size of this mammoth soup bowl. There are so many reasons that this became the day that changed my entire life.
So there we were, July 1st, 2019; Shea and I are sitting at the table in Kanata Noodle House 2 (not to be confused with the unpreparedness of Kanata Noodle House [joking, i'm sure they're great]). He asks, “What do you want, my darling beautiful dear?” and I just couldn’t decide so I said “My handsome man, please do choose for me, as you do know what I like, sometimes more than I, myself.” “It would be my absolute pleasure and honor.” He says. He writes down the order and hands it off to the waiter and all that’s left to do now, is wait. Little did I know, this would be a life altering event.
The waiters bright smile lit up the room as the beloved and sacred soup was delivered to our table. I sink my face closer to the bowl and deeply inhale from the depths of my scent starved lungs. I take my first bite…I then forget what my purpose in the world truly is. Am I on this earth purely to taste this wondrous and angelic food? IS THIS WHAT JESUS EATS?! IS KRISHNA DELVING DEEP INTO THIS SOUP? IS ALLAH APART OF THIS WHIRLWIND DELICIOUSNESS? IS BUDDHA CONSIDERING THIS THE BEST OF KARMAS? I am at a complete loss for words. This….is the best soup….I have ever tasted. The creaminess of the coconut broth, the tenderness of the noodles, the perfection in the oysters and shrimps. It. Was. Art.
It was this day that I knew I would never ever experience such a thing ever again. I dream about swimming through rivers of the broth, making friends with the seafood inside it, being one with the vegetables. It is there, that I feel complete and utter peace. I wake up in the middle of the night sweating, hoping, praying that there is some nearby, but alas, it never is. I need to have the chef live with me, teach me his/her ways, show me the truth behind the soup! Until that day….I will be doing everything I can to eat that soup. "
