Definitely the place to go for your meals if you're looking for the authentic Japanese "over the counter" experience. Karako is a cozy little eatery with the chef and his apprentice, where they serve a good variety of Ramen paired with the best Karrage I've ever eaten. The food is extremely affordable, with set meals going for lower than 1000¥. The meal we got came with 1 Ramen of your choice, a bowl of rice and 3 chunky pieces of Karrage. Another set comes with "grilled rice", which is this crazy fragrant fried rice. The chef also prepares side dishes, absolutely free for all. There were pickles, yakisoba, cabbages and condiments served on little bowls. We stuffed ourselves at Karako on a cold and windy evening, and it was the best dining experience we had in Kyoto. We went back for lunch on our last day, and will come back again if we ever visit Kyoto in the future.
