Dining in Kyoto’s Gion area, I visited Restaurant Kikusui, a century-old iconic Western-style eatery standing elegantly at the east end of Shijo Bridge, right opposite Minamiza Theatre and beside the Kamogawa River. Founded in 1916, this historic establishment occupies a nationally registered tangible cultural property building — a rare blend of Art Deco and Spanish architectural styles that has remained a beloved Kyoto landmark for over a hundred years. Stepping inside feels like returning to the refined Taisho era, with vintage chandeliers, warm classic interiors and graceful dining spaces that preserve their original retro elegance immaculately. The restaurant has passed down its time-honoured culinary craftsmanship across generations, with meticulous attention to ingredient selection and plate presentation. The attentive, polished service was unobtrusive yet thoughtful throughout the meal. Far more than just a dining spot, it is a living piece of Kyoto’s modern culinary heritage, delivering a graceful, memorable experience that balances timeless flavour with enduring historic charm. This was just slightly odd. The food was nice but in unusual combinations. Service was good. It wasn't very busy so felt a bit sterile. English menu available. Good option for picky kids who want something a bit western. On the expensive side. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
