Refused service as foreigners, despite speaking conversational Japanese. We tried to eat at Kitano while staying nearby at Guesthouse Rico. My daughter, who was injured and on crutches, responded in Japanese when the waitress asked if we spoke the language. The waitress briefly consulted the chef (or owner), and we were told we couldn’t eat there. No explanation. We were not loud or impolite. It was quite shocking, especially given my daughter’s visible difficulty walking. We felt refused because we were not Japanese, and the experience left us feeling unwelcome. I hope Wakayama, a city otherwise known for hospitality, encourages its restaurants to treat all guests with basic respect and kindness.
